Which option to choose after you touch and hold an icon
Touch and hold an app icon and iOS opens a menu of quick actions. The option you want first is Remove App. Tapping it usually opens a second choice between Delete App and Remove from Home Screen, and that is where most people pick the wrong one. Choose Delete App.
If your screen skips the second step and shows Delete App directly, tapping it performs the same deletion. Some surfaces, including the App Library, present the delete option straight away.
The two entries look almost identical and produce very different results. Remove from Home Screen takes only the icon away; the app stays on the iPhone, keeps its data, and remains reachable through the App Library and search. Delete App removes the app from the device along with the data it stored there.
A note on wording: Apple has moved, renamed, and regrouped these menu entries across iOS releases, so the labels on your iPhone may not match the ones here exactly. Read the description under each choice and pick the one that says the app will be removed from the iPhone or that its data will be deleted. When a menu offers both, avoid Remove from Home Screen unless hiding the icon is all you want.
If you tapped Remove from Home Screen by mistake, the fix is quick. Open the App Library by swiping left from your last Home Screen page, find the app, touch and hold its icon, and choose Delete App.
How to delete an app from the Home Screen
From the icon menu
- Touch and hold the app's icon until the quick-action menu opens.
- Tap Remove App.
- Tap Delete App.
- Tap Delete to confirm. The app and the data stored on the iPhone are removed.
If the menu does not open, or the icon shows no menu at all, use edit mode instead:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons start to jiggle.
- Tap the minus badge on the app's icon.
- Choose Delete App when the confirmation appears.
- Tap Done to leave edit mode.
Some iOS versions show the delete confirmation directly from the minus badge; others show Remove App first. Either way, the option to pick is the one that warns the app's data will be removed.
From iPhone Storage settings
This route works even when the Home Screen menu misbehaves.
- Open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage.
- Wait for the app list to load, then tap the app.
- Tap Delete App, then confirm with Delete.
On the same screen you will also see Offload App. Offload removes the app's executable but keeps its documents and data, and leaves a dimmed icon on the Home Screen; tapping that icon reinstalls the app with the data intact. If a clean removal is what you want, use Delete App, not Offload App.
How to delete an app from the App Library
The App Library holds every installed app, including apps you have removed from the Home Screen. Swipe left from your last Home Screen page to open it.
- Open the App Library by swiping left from the last Home Screen page, or tap the search field at the top of the App Library.
- Find the app: browse the automatic categories, or type part of its name in the search field.
- Touch and hold the app's icon.
- Choose Delete App. If your version shows Remove App first, tap it and then tap Delete App.
- Confirm with Delete.
Apps that live only in the App Library behave the same way: press and hold the icon until the menu appears, then delete. If the only option offered is Remove from Home Screen, the app belongs to the built-in set that iOS will not uninstall. The troubleshooting section below covers that case.
Remove from Home Screen vs Delete App: what each one leaves behind
What you tap | Home Screen icon | App on the iPhone | On-device data | App Store subscription |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Remove from Home Screen | Disappears | Stays installed; still in the App Library and search | Kept | Unchanged |
Delete App | Disappears | Removed from the iPhone | Deleted with the app | Still active until you cancel it |
Offload App (iPhone Storage only) | Stays, dimmed with a cloud badge | Executable removed; reinstalls on tap | Kept | Unchanged |
The practical difference is simple: removing an icon is a visibility change, deleting an app is a data change. Removing is useful when the Home Screen is cluttered, and it is not a way to free storage, because the app and its files still occupy space. Deleting is the only one of the two that frees the app's storage.
What happens to data, subscriptions, and purchases after deletion
On-device data goes; account data may not
Deleting an app removes the app and the data it kept on the iPhone: documents, caches, local settings, and the saved sign-in session. What it does not do is delete whatever the app stored on someone else's server.
Three places where data can survive a deletion:
- The app's own service. If the app syncs to an account with the developer or another service, such as a game profile, cloud documents, or a notes account, that copy stays. Deleting the app is not the same as deleting the account.
- iCloud. Apps that save to iCloud Drive or to their own iCloud container can leave those files under your Apple Account. Check the app's account settings, or the Files app, if you want them gone too.
- Backups. A backup made before the deletion can contain the app's data. Restoring that backup brings the data back.
A complete cleanup therefore has two steps: delete the app on the iPhone, then remove anything the app kept in its own account or in iCloud.
Subscriptions keep running until you cancel them
This is the most common and most expensive mistake. An App Store subscription is attached to your Apple Account, not to the installed app. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription, does not stop the billing, and does not produce a refund.
Cancel before or after deleting the app, from either place:
- Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select the subscription, and tap Cancel Subscription.
- Open the App Store, tap the profile icon, tap Subscriptions, and follow the same two steps.
The subscription stays usable until the end of the paid period, and reinstalling the app later recognizes it again. What it will not do on its own is stop charging, and no refund is issued for the periods when the app was already uninstalled.
Purchases and re-downloads
Paid apps bought with the same Apple Account can be downloaded again at no charge from the App Store, through your account's purchase history. Account-based in-app purchases, such as unlocked levels, ad removal, or a permanent upgrade, are normally restored on reinstall, sometimes through a Restore Purchases button inside the app.
Consumable purchases are the exception. Coins, credits, and similar one-time items that were already spent do not come back with the app.
When you can't delete an app or the delete option is missing
Work through these checks in order. Deleting an app is normally a two-tap action, so a missing option almost always has a specific cause.
- A Screen Time restriction is blocking it. Open Settings, then Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions. If restrictions are on, go to iTunes & App Store Purchases and set Deleting Apps to Allow. The delete options reappear on the Home Screen as soon as the setting changes.
- The iPhone is managed. On a school or employer device, a management profile can block app removal and undo changes. If Settings shows a device-management or supervision notice, ask the administrator rather than fighting the menu.
- The app is a built-in that iOS will not remove. Apple allows most built-in apps to be deleted, but a small core cannot be removed on any iPhone. The core historically includes Phone, Messages, Safari, Camera, Photos, Settings, and the App Store. Apple has changed both the removable set and the menu wording across iOS releases, so confirm the current list for your version before assuming an app is permanent. When an app cannot be deleted, the menu offers only Remove from Home Screen.
- The icon does not respond, or the menu never appears. Restart the iPhone and try again. If the icon still will not cooperate, delete the app from Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage instead, which does not depend on the Home Screen.
- The app is still downloading or updating. Wait for the progress ring under the icon to finish. Menus can be incomplete while an install is in progress.
- It is a profile or enterprise app. Apps installed by a configuration profile or a mobile-device-management tool are removed through the profile, not from the Home Screen. Check Settings, then General, then VPN & Device Management; if a profile owns the app, removing it there is the clean route.
If the app can be deleted but the option keeps disappearing, the cause is usually temporary: finish the restart, check Screen Time again, and confirm that no update is running.
Quick recap
- To delete an app: touch and hold the icon, tap Remove App, then Delete App, then confirm.
- If the menu goes straight to Delete App, that is the correct choice.
- Avoid Remove from Home Screen when you want the app and its data gone; it only hides the icon.
- Cancel the app's subscription first, because deletion alone will not stop the billing.
- Use Settings → General → iPhone Storage when the Home Screen menu is unavailable.
